The color purple-A black Southern woman struggles to find her identity after suffering years of abuse from her father and others over 40 years. The mise en scene of this film when analysing the acting is one of my favorite parts as it is very well done. To Kill a Mockingbird- a small southern town with Depression is unknowingly riddled with this even more devastating disease. And one lone soul is prepared to make the diagnosis. This 1962 classic based on Harper Lee’s novel is one of the most powerful arguments against racism ever put on screen.
12 years a slave- in the years before the Civil War, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from New York, is kidnapped and sold into slavery in the South. Subjected to the cruelty of one malevolent owner (Michael Fassbender), he also finds unexpected kindness from another, as he struggles continually to survive and maintain some of his dignity. The represntaition of black people in america
- The principal creator of a film- The director of this film is Steven Spielberg, in his later years, his films began addressing humanistic issues
- The principal source of meaning in a film-In chapter 73 of “The Color Purple”, Shug Avery says that she believes that it angers God if a person walks by the color of purple in a field without stopping to notice and admire it. In this statement, Shug summarizes her religious philosophy; to her, God is not some distant deity living on high, but a genderless, raceless being that wants people to appreciate and enjoy life. It is also significant that she chose the color of purple, for it is the color of royalty; and yet a really deep purple seems almost to be black.
- A technically excellent filmmaker-
Reverse ShotThis technique involves a “shot that views an action from the opposite side of the previous shot, which gives the effect of looking from one character to another.” This method is often used to portray conversations between actors in a film. Director Steven Speilberg often used reverse shot in The Color Purple, in order to form a “spiritual linkage” between the main character (Celie) and important aspects of her life.
Tracking Shot Steven Speilberg used this technique often in The Color Purple in order to follow characters within certain scenes.
In The Color Purple, songs were used to form and portray connections between the characters and certain aspects of their lives. The clip below shows an example of this in a scene where a church song was able to re-patch Shug’s (supporting character) relationship with her father and also bring her back to the church, which was an important element that was a part of her past. Shug was also singing another song in the scene that depicted her present lifestyle as a Blues singer. As a result, the two songs were able to form a dialogue that represented a connection between Shug’s present life, compared to her past.Intercutting was used in The Color Purple’s the famous scene that consisted of a confrontation between Sophia and Celie. This scene switches from the confrontation to another scene that involved Sophia’s husband, Harpo.
Track-in Shots– used this method to draw attention to significant moments in The Color Purple. For example, Spielberg uses track-in shot in a popular scene that involves Shug Avery singing “Miss Celie’s Blues.” The clip below shows an example of this technique at 0.12 seconds.
